Saw this movie on the first day. Had high hopes too on account of it being a Diwali release + YRF + Aamir Khan + Amitabh Bachchan! However, I would say I am slightly disappointed. It is definitely not a Must Watch, but it is one of those movies that you can enjoy only on big screens. Let us dive deep into each element without wasting time. Spoilers ahead.
The movie starts with a backstory of how Princess Zafira loses her family and kingdom and escapes with Amitabh Bachchan to lead a Thug life — encountering and stealing from the British whenever possible. Enter Aamir Khan, the most redeemable part of this film, whose character single-handedly runs the entire movie. The film shamelessly relies on Firangi Mallah’s conniving character to give you unexpected twists in an otherwise predictable narrative. While Amitabh’s honest thug is hopeful, Aamir’s cunning spy is constantly struggling against the ideals that Khudabaksh expects of him — and this dynamic is captured brilliantly, probably due to the versatility of the two legends.
What really did not click for me in this movie are the unnecessary frills like Katrina Kaif. The dance sequences and her costumes are so contrived that I am surprised she even agreed to do this film. I think they should have let her direct her own parts and she would have done a better job. Even Firangi’s friend Sanichar, who is supposed to provide wisdom to Firangi’s wits, does nothing to move the plot. I am also indignant that the movie suggests a non-platonic relationship between Zafira and Firangi.
Like I said, it is definitely not a must-watch, but the VFX are done well and there are no other movies in theatres for the weekend. So go watch it without any expectations.
